UPDATE 4-18-05:
So no new comic (duh...) but I updated the links page a skosh so I guess you can go look at other comics that are updated. Just promise you'll come back. But see? Some form of new content every Sunday. As always, everything's under construction. This site and the Big Dig in Boston. We both get kickbacks to keep it flowin'. Next time I alter the links I'll actually make the page...not...sucky.

Ian:

To make a HRN rant, combine (apology for lateness of post) with (promises to never be late again) in a bowl and stir. When the two ingredients are mixed, fold in the (comments on the art not being very good) you've been allowing to marinate overnight in (secret pride at how good it looks). Put the mixture into a greased baking pan and cover with (some cool links "Cool" being not work safe just to warn you) and (random funny). In America you'd place it in an oven, but Japanese kitchens consider ovens to be about as required as a super happy fun slide (I know I shouldn't, but when am I gonna be back here?) so hold the pan over one of the burners for about three hours, turning once an hour. Garnish with complaints about Japan and acting superior because you live in Japan to taste.

OK. So it's been a long time to put this up. In my defence, the Lord God Almighty didn't want this page to come up. I had it written and rough pencilled the day Llyw put up his last comic, which I'm sure you're all quite sick of staring at. I did the tighter pencilling in a day, and got the lightbox from Llyw that night to do the inking. Things started going bad when I left the lightbox on the train. No problem, the attendant told me. Pick it up tomorrow. Llyw swung by the main terminus in Umeda, but they didn't have it. Eehh? It is basically inconceivable to me that some Japanese person would steal a lightbox, though *maybe* they'd steal a laptop, which it kinda looks like, but even that isn't too likely, and besides it was in the last car where the conductor can see, making that even less of a possibility. So, as you can see. God.

I've been really busy writing articles and doing work things in the meantime, but have also taken time out to price lightboxes since at the very least I need to replace Llyw's, and at this point why not buy myself one anyway? It turns out that the lightbox Llyw bought for 6,000 yen is now retailing for 8,000 yen. Yay! And by Yay here, of course, I mean laaaaame. So I've been trying to find a cheaper way to do it, maybe at a used film store. It might be helpful at this point to say that a lightbox is a freakin' box. With a light, usually neon, in it. That's it. That's it! 8,000????? Again, the Big Man Himself.

At the behest of my fan(s) I decided to just put in the tighter pencils and put the dialogue to that. You can still see structure underdrawings, the panel boundaries are drawn freehand, there's even a few stylistic choices I was gonna wait to make when I did the ink work, but whatever, something's better than nothing. So off I go to the scanner, which magically decided to stop working. The warning that popped on the screen wasn't exactly readable. Not that it was in Japanese, like the instructions were, but because it was all question marks. Seriously. Warning:??????????????? then below it two buttons to choose between, ????????? and ?????????. I tried both to no avail. Thanks!

I'll leave out the other trials and tribulations, the frogs that have been raining in Kyoto so I couldn't go to Kinkos, the firstborn sons of all tech support people dying so they took the day off work, but suffice it to say it's been a bit difficult to get this page out here. On the other hand I am pleased with how quickly I was able to draw it, so hopefully that'll bode well for the future. Some day once the lightbox is again among us I'll go back and ink these pages, but only when I'm ahead in the HRN schedule so don't hold your breath. In the meantime I'm gonna try like hell to find a cheap solution to the problem, but my deadline is when Llyw's done with his pencils. If I haven't solved it by then I'll buy the damn overpriced lamp, so I won't be slowing down the next post. That'll be all Llyw. And Thor, who has some kind of grudge against him I hear.

Let me leave you with a blast from the past I assume you all grew up playing this, to me it was the twin pillar of computer gaming with Oregon Trail as the ultimate in virtual experiences. The author Neil Gaiman (no link. If you don't know who he is, you simply suck, and no amount of clicking will help) said HHGG had the best graphics of any game, cause they were all up in his head. It's really a shame Douglas Adams died when he did, he was well ahead of his time with interactive environments (it's the granddaddy of Myst) and was working on other cool projects at the time.
Llyw:You know you work for a corporation if you go to a meeting to discuss the problems people face in your workplace with your managers and your managers then spend most of the meeting lecturing you on how any difficulties are either your responsibility to deal with or unavoidable facts of life. What fantastic assholery.

With the new school year starting here in Japan both Ian and I have been really busy with trainings and meetings and whatnot. I know it’s not really a very good excuse, but hey, better something than nothing.

I never used to like spring all that much, but here in Japan, it is the season where all of the gods smile down upon the land, and make it more beautiful and comfortable than anywhere else on earth. If I grew up with this kind of beauty every year, I might be able to believe that the sun shines out my nation’s bunghole too. Well then again, most of America isn’t anywhere near this pretty and most Americans think the sun shines out of their personal bunghole, so I guess both our cultures are jerk-factories.

I wonder why nationalism is such an appealing idea. Being American is something that has shaped who I am, but really does that mean I have to be proud of it and love America in the face of its horrible international belligerence, fiscal and social inequity, and high-handed hypocrisy? I don’t know. No question gives me the same bittersweet taste of answering like, “Where do you come from?”

Heh, pretty heavy stuff for the rant of a romantic comedy webcomic. Oh well, if people flame me for this, well that will just mean people are finally coming to see HRN, and maybe that will motivate me to update on time more.

Anyway hope you enjoy Ian’s page, and I’ll do my best to get on track with mine, even if I have to go on without the light box.
